During the last decade, the average annual unemployment rate in the Barranquilla Metropolitan Area has recorded a downward trend, just as in Colombia. Between 2007 -2011, the Barranquilla Metropolitan Area had an annual average unemployment rate of 10.1%, lower than the national figure (11.4%) and the figures recorded as a whole in the 13 metropolitan areas in the country (12 , 0%). During the 2001 - 2011 period, the unemployment rate fell 7.7 percentage points, arriving to a single digit, beign at 7.88% (2014).

As for the distribution of the number of employed population in the metropolitan area for different economic sectors, during the year 2011, the industries that absorbed more labor force were trade, restaurants and hotels, community and personal services, industry and transport, which altogether concentrated 67% of the working population. When comparing the data for the year 2011 with the results of 2010, an increase in the employment levels in the construction and real estate industries is evidenced, with variations of 10.0% and 7.9% respectively. Within the other sectors group, the mining and quarrying and the financial intermediation sectors were those with the greatest variation.
