During the period 2000 - 2013 exports in the state of Atlantico showed a growing trend, with an average annual growth rate of export value of 8.7%. In 2013 the state of Atlantico represented 3.3% of the total value exported by the country. During the year 2013 the total exports of the department reached the sum of U.S. $ 1,440 FOB million, an decrement of -0,54% over 2013.

The industrial sector had the highest participation in the period between 2000- 2013, with an average of 96.4%. In the period of 2014 between January and November exports of the industrial sector accounted for 89.1%. The subsectors that accounted for greater export value in the industry, within the state of Atlantico, were chemicals with a share of 41.2% followed by metalworking with 22.3% and food and beverages 9.5%. Which together accounted for 73% of industrial exports and 69.9% of the total value of exports of the state.

During the period 2000 - 2013, the value of imports in the state of Atlantico reported an average growth of 11.9%, accomplishing a 5.6% of the total import value nationwide. Meanwhile, in 2014 imports recorded a CIF value of U.S. $ 3.483 million, an increase of 10%.The volume in tons imported in 2014 is 2.786.622 tons.

The composition of imports by sector for the period 2000 - 2013, concentrated in the industrial sector, with an average share of 88.8% and an average annual growth of 12.1%. Meanwhile according to the classification CUODE (use or purpose), imports of Atlantico during 2013 were mainly raw materials and intermediate products for industry, which together accounted for 24.0%.
