Generalities
Barranquilla is an export-oriented city, with an average growth of export value of 11.8% in the period 2003-2013. Industrial exports of chemicals, metalworking and food and beverage products outstand.

The Industrial District and Port of Barranquilla is Colombia's fourth largest city and the first in the Caribbean Region regarding population level.

The municipalities of Soledad, Malambo, Puerto Colombia and Puerto Galapa form the Metropolitan Area of Barranquilla.

Atlantico is the sixth state of Colombia with the largest share in the national GDP, and seventh in the National Industrial GDP, according to preliminary data for 2014.
Being center influx of immigrants, the city has an ethnically diverse and multicultural environment.
